Patient Reviews
NP Ruiz was not only incredibly attentive, but paid attention to every concern I had. I felt heard and understood. I was nervous before our session, but he helped me feel at ease.
Who I Work With
Individuals
I help patients feel empowered to better manage their emotions and behaviors. Together, we identify patterns and behaviors that have caused confusion, pain, or feelings of loss—and create a plan to move forward. I work with patients on anxiety, depression, anger management, conflict resolution, intimacy, and social skills. Central to this process is developing an emotional vocabulary that allows you to express yourself effectively.
Couples
I help couples build an emotional foundation and examine patterns affecting their relationship. We explore how behaviors like emotional distancing or lack of acceptance shape your experience together. The goal is to transform these patterns by creating a shared language to communicate feelings and concerns. Through this work, couples gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their partner, and their relationship.
Children (ages 6-17)
My work with children centers on helping them feel safe, seen, and heard. I create a judgment-free space where children can express themselves without limitations. The goal is to build an environment where children develop their emotional vocabulary and feel empowered through the therapeutic process.
Industries & Professionals
I work with clients across a variety of high-performance industries. I have extensive experience with professionals in film, television, sports, and entertainment, as well as those in the tech and finance sectors. I understand the unique pressures these fields bring and tailor my approach accordingly.

About Me

Background & Training
My name is Jose Ruiz. I am a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with over 20 years in private practice. I received my education at Columbia University and New York University. My training includes psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
Therapeutic Approach
My approach is eclectic and grounded in evidence-based research. I draw from multiple therapeutic frameworks to understand each patient's unique emotional experience and help them find better ways to manage their mental health.
My goal is to help patients explore and access parts of themselves they haven't been able to reach before. This journey begins with building trust, then moves into deeper exploration of your history, family dynamics, relational patterns, and self-image. Along the way, we develop an emotional vocabulary that helps you express yourself more effectively. Therapy isn't always easy—it can be uncomfortable—but with time, that discomfort gives way to growth and fulfillment.
Who I Treat
I work with adults, children, couples, and families from diverse cultural, ethnic, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds. My patients come to me with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, anger management, relationship issues, intimacy, social skills, and professional performance.
